1. Formatting and Table creation

We start by creating our first excel document that we are going to use for all the different lessons that we will do.

See Our  Video with step by step on how to complete lesson.

  1. Create your excel document and save it call it “MyExcel”.

Now that you have created the excel document and saved it, let us change Sheet1 to “My Exercises”

1.1        Learning to Format

A good excel documented is formatted well. Here we introduce the concept for formats between all available formatting symbols

Create a table such as the one shown below

Days  of the week Revenue Customers Date
Monday  $       12,345.00                  23,411.00 1-May-17
Tuesday  $       34,890.00                  34,567.00 2-May-17
Wednesday  $     245,089.00                  45,690.00 3-May-17
Thursday  $     432,509.00                569,078.00 4-May-17
Friday  $     190,345.00                  40,213.00 5-May-17
Saturday  $     109,769.00                  39,876.00 6-May-17
Sunday  $       25,698.00                  25,439.00 7-May-17

To create this table you need to enter all the values. Make sure your spellings are correct.

When you are done entering the values go to formatting and change to currency

For the numbers do that same and format using the , function on top

For the date click on the cell that you want to change for date, and select all the cells with dates.. When it is highlighted, you then right click on it and click on “Format Cell” as shown below

On format select the date option then scroll down to pick the option that says 14-Mar-2012, click ok. Highlight the dates and click ok.

Congratulations you have formatted all the cells.

The same can be done with any other functions.

1.1        Format cell color

Next you have to change the cell color for the tables to appear as shown below

First we change the format of the table with the first row being “Accent2”. To do this, highlight your fist row, the row with the headings. Then go to “Cell Style” and choose Accent2

Next we are going to highlight the columns with the days (Monday-Sunday). Here you will then go to Cell Styles and select 20%-Accent

Congratulations you have now styled your table

Next highlight your first row to make it bold, and the dates to make them italics. You select the top row, and click B for bold on top of your document. Highlight the days column and click I as well.

Your table should now look like this

Days  of the week Revenue Customers Date
Monday  $       12,345.00                  23,411.00 1-May-2017
Tuesday  $       34,890.00                  34,567.00 2-May-2017
Wednesday  $     245,089.00                  45,690.00 3-May-2017
Thursday  $     432,509.00                569,078.00 4-May-2017
Friday  $     190,345.00                  40,213.00 5-May-2017
Saturday  $     109,769.00                  39,876.00 6-May-2017
Sunday  $       25,698.00                  25,439.00 7-May-2017

Now change your font for your table by highlight the whole table, select font (Times Roman) and font size (9).

1.1        Exercise 1

To start off create sheet 2 which you will rename “Table 2”

Having populated the tables you are required to shade the first row in grey select from the floors (White, Background,1 Darker 15%)

Format the rows 2 to row 5 in dollars such that the numbers are in currency.

After reviewing your table you decide that it can look better. SELECT all in the table and go to “Format as Table” and select “Table Style Medium 3”
